7th Annual Zonta Says NO to Violence Against Women Silent Walk – October 7th, 2022

6th Annual Zonta Says NO to Violence Against Women Silent Walk

Please join us in our 6th Annual Zonta Says NO to Violence Against Women Silent Walk in downtown Milwaukee next Monday, October 4, 11:55 AM to 1 PM, Milwaukee City Hall.

Intimate partner violence in Milwaukee and the state of Wisconsin has dramatically increased in the past two years and continues to rise at appalling levels. Through this event, we hope to draw the attention of people in the greater Milwaukee area to the issue of domestic violence and inspire community action to change this trend.

The Zonta Says NO Walk will be a silent walk around the Milwaukee downtown area, beginning and ending at Milwaukee City Hall, for the purpose of remembering those in Wisconsin who died in 2020 domestic violence-related homicides. The one-mile walk will begin promptly at 11:55 am and is anticipated to take about 30 minutes.

Following the walk, several community leaders will briefly comment on the issue of domestic violence, after which we will honor those who fell victim in 2020. Shawn Mohammed, Assoc Dir of The Asha Project will speak on behalf of End Domestic Abuse Wisconsin, the organization that publishes the annual Homicide Report. Other confirmed speakers include Carmen Pitre, President and CEO, Sojourner; DA John Chisholm or his representative; Sgt Theresa Janick, Domestic Violence High Risk Team of the Sensitive Crimes Division, MPD, and Karin Tyler, Family Injury and Violence Prevention Mgr, City Office of Violence Prevention. The event will conclude at 1:00 pm.

Bring friends, family, colleagues. If you are representing an organization, feel free to wear logo clothing to demonstrate your support. In past years, we have received strong media support. Make sure to arrive by 11:45.

Save the Date!

October: Domestic Violence Awareness Month

For the past 4 years, the Zonta Club of Milwaukee conducted its Zonta Says No to Violence Against Women silent march in memory of those who died the prior year as a result of domestic violence. The march coincided with the annual report of domestic violence homicides and deaths published by End Domestic Abuse Wisconsin. This year, due to the pandemic, we are not conducting the march. Instead, through the month of October, Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we will be sharing some of the statistics, analysis, and stories from End Domestic Abuse Wisconsin’s 2019 Homicide Report as well as other information about domestic violence.

In 2019, there were 52 domestic violence homicide victims in 23 Wisconsin counties. That’s a huge increase over the 32 victims in 2018. In addition, in 2019, there were 18 perpetrator suicides in addition to the homicide deaths, the highest number since End Abuse started collecting data 20 years ago.

Here’s a link to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article about the recent release of the End Abuse Wisconsin Homicide Report.

2020 Fundraiser – Online Auction Live NOW through September 27th!!

Link to the Auction Site: https://go.rallyup.com/2020zontafundraiser

Bidding started today and will run through September 27th

Since we could not safely hold our 2020 Zonta Fashion Show fundraiser, we were not able to raise approximately $25,000 for nonprofit services serving women and girls. Our alternative is an online auction to be held September 19th through September 27th along with seeking monetary donations.

The money raised will be distributed in 2021 to local non-profit agencies that empower women and girls in the Milwaukee metro area. This will be the only effort to raise funds for next year’s grants. These organizations provide education, basic needs such as food, housing and transportation, domestic violence support, and/or job preparation. Over the years we have supported over 75 local nonprofit agencies as well as Zonta International Service Projects and Scholarships.

Here’s our opportunity to support next year’s grants to local nonprofits serving women and girls. Please also promote this event to your friends, relatives and co-workers. The items are interesting and participation is fun & easy. Monetary donations to Zonta Foundation, Inc. can be made at bottom of auction page, through a donation page https://go.rallyup.com/zontadonation (available now), the Donate Now button the the header of this website, our Facebook page or by writing a check payable to Zonta Foundation, Inc. and mailed to Elizabeth Stull Foundation Treasurer at 3049 S. 39th Street Milwaukee, WI 53215.

Milwaukee Zonta members and friends have proven to be very generous in the past. Here is one more opportunity ..if you are able, give someone a reason to smile.  Thank you!

Please Help Raise Funds for our Zonta Club’s Covid-19 Crisis Response

– A combined Service and Advocacy initiative –

The COVID-19 crisis is adversely affecting women and families, particularly regarding basic needs, not only health, but also food, shelter and safety with increases in domestic violence, unemployment, and evictions. We will be supporting agencies whose resources are stretched due to this crisis and whose mission aligns with ours.

We are asking members who are able to donate to our club’s Zonta Foundation to help these agencies in need, making a bigger impact than we could as individuals.

  • If members who are able can donate the cost of our monthly meeting dinner, we should be able to raise $750 or more for each of the four agencies we have selected for this summer’s effort.
  • Since we did not meet as a Club in person and dine together in March, April, May and June, we each did not incur a $30 per month meeting cost. Please consider donating this amount or more.
  • Feel free to send in one check, or you may elect to donate monthly over the summer. We are also offering on-line donations via Facebook.

We have selected four agencies to support with this summer’s effort:

  • Milwaukee Homeless Veterans Initiative (MHVI)/ WOVIN –Women Veterans Initiative:
    • Women veterans and their families
    • Providing housing and food
    • Sojourner Family Peace Center:
    • Women and their families, as domestic violence is spiking in COVID-19 crisis
    • Providing safety, food, housing
  • Sixteenth St Health Center:
    • Patient and family-centered medical care and social services, serving largely below poverty level Spanish-speaking population in Milwaukee and Waukesha Counties
    • Open and accepting new patients, need protective equipment
  • The Cathedral Center:
    • Primary focus is on women and children, working to end homelessness
    • Concerned about running out of supplies, basic needs and PPE

Donations can be sent to the Zonta Foundation Treasurer:
Elizabeth Stull
3049 S. 39th Street
Milwaukee, WI 53215

Please indicate “COVID” on your check and note if this is a one-time donation for the full summer effort, or one of multiple checks if you prefer to donate monthly. Or you may donate on-line via our Facebook page. Thank you!
