Thankful for Giving Tuesday and Florence Eiseman Children’s Clothing!

We are so appreciative of our Zonta Foundation. Inc being the recipient of a percentage of sales today from Florence Eiseman Children’s Clothing!  Their founder, Florence Eiseman was a member of the Zonta Club of Milwaukee from 1954-1970. During that time significant changes were happening in the club, including the formation of our charitable 501c3 arm, Zonta Foundation, Inc., and addressing affordable housing for seniors in the Milwaukee area with the development of Zonta Manor, now known as Cambridge Apartments.

Also …it’s Giving Tuesday! Please consider donating to our Foundation to help make a better world for women and girls!  The DONATE NOW button is shown above!

Summer Event – Neu-Life/ONG Collaboration and Celebration

Please consider attending this event next week! This event celebrates the collaboration between Our Next Generation (Zonta member La Toya Sykes) and Neu-Life (Zonta member Joann Harris-Commodore). In the past, we have provided support to both organizations but this collaboration among the 3 organizations is a significant opportunity for all.

Neu-Life provided Neu-STEPP programming for kids at ONG. Neu-STEPP is a healthy relationships program that includes significant educational segments on trafficking.

Zonta Club members are encouraged to attend if possible.

7th Annual Zonta Says NO to Violence Against Women Silent Walk – October 7th, 2022

6th Annual Zonta Says NO to Violence Against Women Silent Walk

Please join us in our 6th Annual Zonta Says NO to Violence Against Women Silent Walk in downtown Milwaukee next Monday, October 4, 11:55 AM to 1 PM, Milwaukee City Hall.

Intimate partner violence in Milwaukee and the state of Wisconsin has dramatically increased in the past two years and continues to rise at appalling levels. Through this event, we hope to draw the attention of people in the greater Milwaukee area to the issue of domestic violence and inspire community action to change this trend.

The Zonta Says NO Walk will be a silent walk around the Milwaukee downtown area, beginning and ending at Milwaukee City Hall, for the purpose of remembering those in Wisconsin who died in 2020 domestic violence-related homicides. The one-mile walk will begin promptly at 11:55 am and is anticipated to take about 30 minutes.

Following the walk, several community leaders will briefly comment on the issue of domestic violence, after which we will honor those who fell victim in 2020. Shawn Mohammed, Assoc Dir of The Asha Project will speak on behalf of End Domestic Abuse Wisconsin, the organization that publishes the annual Homicide Report. Other confirmed speakers include Carmen Pitre, President and CEO, Sojourner; DA John Chisholm or his representative; Sgt Theresa Janick, Domestic Violence High Risk Team of the Sensitive Crimes Division, MPD, and Karin Tyler, Family Injury and Violence Prevention Mgr, City Office of Violence Prevention. The event will conclude at 1:00 pm.

Bring friends, family, colleagues. If you are representing an organization, feel free to wear logo clothing to demonstrate your support. In past years, we have received strong media support. Make sure to arrive by 11:45.

Save the Date!

October: Domestic Violence Awareness Month

For the past 4 years, the Zonta Club of Milwaukee conducted its Zonta Says No to Violence Against Women silent march in memory of those who died the prior year as a result of domestic violence. The march coincided with the annual report of domestic violence homicides and deaths published by End Domestic Abuse Wisconsin. This year, due to the pandemic, we are not conducting the march. Instead, through the month of October, Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we will be sharing some of the statistics, analysis, and stories from End Domestic Abuse Wisconsin’s 2019 Homicide Report as well as other information about domestic violence.

In 2019, there were 52 domestic violence homicide victims in 23 Wisconsin counties. That’s a huge increase over the 32 victims in 2018. In addition, in 2019, there were 18 perpetrator suicides in addition to the homicide deaths, the highest number since End Abuse started collecting data 20 years ago.

Here’s a link to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article about the recent release of the End Abuse Wisconsin Homicide Report.
